FTPMost webs are published using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). This is usually accessed through a program such as Cute FTP, Leech, WS FTP or Terrapin. Each of these is similar to two separate versions of Windows Explorer - one for your computer, one for the server. On the left side you have to navigate to the part of your computer which contains the files you want to publish to the internet. You can now publish your web site by moving folders from the left side to the right. You can do this by double clicking the files, by dragging them across or by clicking an upload button.
The image above shows Cute FTP in action. There are four boxes. The top window shows the commands that the program is sending to the server. Best ignore this if you do not want to scare yourself. The left window is my computer and lists all the files directories within the web. The right pane is the server and again lists all the files and directories that sit on the server for this domain name. The bottom window will show any files that are waiting to be transferred (empty in this case). |
